1. Soil Preparation
Choose a planting location with well-draining soil. Loosen the top 2-3 inches of soil and remove any debris or large stones.
2. Sowing
Sow the seeds directly into the garden after the last frost date, or start them indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost. Lightly cover the seeds with about 1/8 inch of fine soil or vermiculite. Do not bury them deeply, as they require some light to germinate.
3. Watering
Gently mist or lightly water the soil immediately after planting to ensure it is evenly moist. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged until germination occurs (usually within 10-21 days).
4. Light and Temperature
Place indoor pots in a warm, bright location (70-75Β°F or 21-24Β°C). Once seedlings have developed 2-3 sets of true leaves, they can be transplanted outdoors after hardening off.
5. Ongoing Care
Water regularly during dry spells, applying water at the base of the plant to keep the foliage dry. Applying a balanced, natural fertilizer once a month will encourage larger, more prolific blooms. Deadhead spent flowers to prolong the blooming season.
